Foundations for Change: An Early Childhood Development Hub for Children of Agricultural Tenants
Project Overview
Foundations for Change (FOUCHA) is a community-based initiative envisioned by SCALE-ACTION to break the intergenerational poverty cycle affecting children from agricultural tenant families in Malawi.
The project focuses on establishing Early Childhood Development (ECD) Hubs in disadvantaged agricultural tenant communities, improving access to quality ECD services for children aged 0–5 years. The initial implementation will take place in Embombeni, Mzimba District.
By investing in early learning, nutrition, health, and caregiver education, FOUCHA strengthens the foundation for lifelong learning, resilience, and self-reliance.

Early Learning & School Readiness
Play-based learning activities that support cognitive, language, and socio-emotional development.
Nutrition & Child Health
Child feeding, hygiene promotion, and basic health support to improve growth and well-being.
Caregiver Education
Structured parenting sessions that equip caregivers with essential nurturing and early stimulation skills.
Safe & Inclusive Spaces
Child-friendly ECD hubs designed to be safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments.
Community Ownership & Sustainability
Community ownership is a core pillar of the FOUCHA Project. Participating communities voluntarily contribute labour and locally available materials towards the construction of basic learning infrastructure and play spaces.
This approach strengthens local commitment, promotes sustainability, and ensures long-term impact beyond the project period.
